Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage
Chinese incense art originated in pre-Qin period and flourished in Tang-Song dynasties. The incense burners unearthed from Mawangdui Han Tomb (2nd century BCE) reveal a sophisticated incense culture. Tang poet Wang Wei’s verse “Knowing not the Temple of Incense, For miles I’ve come through clouded peaks” depicts thriving incense rituals. The Song Dynasty’s “Chen’s Incense Manual” documented hundreds of recipes, perfecting the art of blending fragrances. This wisp of smoke embodies scholars’ refinement (“adding incense while reading by night”), TCM’s medicinal wisdom, and spiritual cultivation. Today, as intangible cultural heritage, it continues to convey Eastern philosophy to the world.
